LONGBOARD TUBE RIDING 2005

[longboard] WHEN Angel Salinas launched his first Invitational Longboard Tube Riding Contest in 1998 he demonstrated that longboarding isn't just for geezers on small waves. On the contrary, the sport broke new ground and proved that there is no better place for Summer surfing than Zicatela. Its success paved the way for Oxbow Soul & Style and this year's ESPN X Games.

Next month, Oct. 8 - 12, is the 6th edition of Tube Riding Contest and its shaping up to be a great one. Last year's finalists, Hawaiians Duane de Soto (the winner) and Dino Mirando will be back along with Lance Hookano, Keegan Edwards, Jamie Sterling and Noah Shimabukoro. Californian stars will include Joel Tudor, Zack Howard, Josh Baxter Darren Ledingham and Brendan White. Surfers from countries as diverse as England (Elliot Dudley), Brazil (Marcelo Freitas) and Venezuela (Gerard Wheir) will also participate.

This event broke ground also with the inclusion of iron woman Kim Hambrick going up against the guys. This year she will be joined by big-waver Jamilah Star and Calie Desire de Soto (familiar surname,?) Full details in next month's El Sol.
