The regulars called it Mauro's, because it was as if it was Mauro Malagri, the proprietor's, home. Mauro wanted all of his guests to be performers, and the first thing he'd ask a new customer would be if he or she played a musical instrument. There were poetry readings. Mauro told jokes and performed magic tricks at the bar. The open mic jam sessions gave forth Proyecto Mandala, the modern Reggae group.
Now Proyecto Mandala is planning a European tour, another loss for Puerto, but good for the band. And Jorge (Noala) Guerra, is leaving Proyecto Mandala, at least temporarily, to take his trumpet and ukulele to other places in Mexico and the world. We wish them all the best of luck, and best of luck to Magda and Rafa who always attended to us with patience and good humor.
Bar Aquí lives on at You Tube. Key words: Bar Aqui, Zicatela, Proyecto Mandala, Mauro Malgari.
The good news is that we now have a new art gallery on Zicatela, Galería del Puerto (behind Charley restaurant) and that the gallery owner, Armando Gonzalez, will be promoting local artists and featuring cultural events each month.
Join us in offering a warm Puerto welcome to Armando and Paula at the re-inauguration of the gallery on Friday, March 27.
Still stoked from the success of the Puerto Blues Fest, which had to change locales at the last minute, the owners of La Hacienda Bar & Restaurant on Av, Oaxaca, hosts of BluesFest 2009, want to keep a good thing going, so they'll be featuring live blues and rock every Saturday night.
Also in the works una Noche Bohemia, a night of song and carousing in
tribute to the great composer Alvaro Carrillo, featuring a host of local
troubadours.
Friday, April 3 beginning at 7 p.m.
