Just as Puerto Escondido is the number 1 surf destination in Mexico, so its fall classic, the International Surf Tournament of the Fiestas of November is the country's premier surfing contest.
Under the capable management of Central Surf's Angel Salinas, Puerto's Ambassador of Surf to the world, and Tom Chaney, this year's competition has been dubbed the PXM International Pro-Am and offers a total purse of $10,000 dollars.
A large field of hopefuls from some dozen different countries will match their skills against Zicatela's famous Mexican Pipeline.
Local surfers have dominated in this contest in recent years. Perhaps that's because they know how to make the best of the placid surf that often prevails this time of year.
The PXM International Pro-Am begins on Friday Nov. 17 and runs through Sunday the 19th. Registration fee is $100 dollars and can be accomplished by visiting Central Surf on Zicatela. (Tel: 582-2285, e-mail: centralsurfshop@hotmail.com)
The pre-contest meeting will take place at Hotel Olas Altas starting at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 16.
This year there will be even more activities surrounding the surfing meet. Among them: Rock concerts with some of the hot up and coming bands from DF, a Fashion Show with 10 professional models (also from DF - those chilangos know a good beach event!). There will be an Extreme Zone with Rock Climbing, bungee jumping, volleyball, the obligatory Bikini Contests and general beach partying.
How bad can that be?
