One of the amazing things about Cinque
Terre, was the high speed rail service, almost all in tunnels. I think the majority of rail
between La Spezia and Genoa was all underground, as the coast is extremely
rugged, albeit picturesque.
This shot was from the station in Riomaggiore, where we initially departed,
looking back along the line the 8 km to La
Spezia, which was, excepting a few hundred metres, all in tunnels. The express trains came
rushing out into the open along the platforms extremely rapidly, and I don't think that would be
allowed in North America. {:-)
