Knossos was the centre of Minoan civilization, up until about 3450 years ago when it was obliterated
by the huge volcano on Santorini (Thera). It was in this palace that the Minotaur (King Mino's
bull) legend occurred. In 1930 Arthur Evans found and excavated Knossos, and partially restored
some parts to what he surmised they may have looked like. While this was controversial, it did give
an example of the palatial grandeur. Here, Charlene stood next to a huge vessel in front of one
restored palace section with red columns.
