The Kykkos Monastery, founded in 1100, was the best known and largest monastery in Cyprus. It was
situated high on a mountain about 30 km north-west from Mount Olympos. It was ornately decorated
and painted, as this photograph attempted to illustrate with a view down a corridor on the second
floor. The gold leaf was real, and the artwork was very impressive and extensive.
Presently, not many youths become monks, so the monastery was largely empty, and much work and
maintenance had to be performed by outside contractors.
