The Parthenon, while not needing much introduction, still blew my mind, both with its grandeur and size. It had at least twice the dimensions that I had anticipated and the white marble was wondrous. More or less, the Parthenon was just massive. I would equate it in size and colour to the Eatons store in downtown Vancouver. We stayed in the Plaka district just underneath the Acropolis, but we were not directly able to view it as we were too close. The Acropolis was a huge marble plateau, with cliffs on most exposures. Once we were on the plateau, we had to climb up through two big stone entrance ways, one Greek, and the other Roman, to access the final area with the monuments. It was amazing how slippery the marble bedrock had become after being polished by millions of feet. The monument to Athena, the Parthenon, was magnificent, its size and whiteness sure help to give it visual appeal. It was under extensive renovations for the 2004 Olympic Games when we were there, and we were not able to enter it at all, however, the interior scaffolding helped give perspective to the size, which may have not been normally realised.
