While there were fireworks and Illuminares festivals scheduled in Vancouver for the Saturday night,
they were preempted by a spectacular sunset and lightning show, along with an associated drenching
to quell the planned festivities. The lightning show was pretty neat, and I mounted my camera on my
balcony with 30 s time exposures to capture the strikes. I also tried some longer "bulb" exposures,
but they tended to be overexposed and noisy.
While I was sitting at my desk, there was a massive flash with thunder and I wondered if my camera captured it, but when I checked, the image was almost completely white, so I thought something had screwed up. However, I was able to substantially decrease the gamma and find that the huge strike went right across the view, and ionized all the air to purple glow
