Twice a year anywhere in the tropics, the sun will pass directly overhead at noon. In Tamatave, the
two dates are November 10, when the sun is passing to the south for summer, and January 29, when it
is passing to the north again. So, the dark side on the house changes twice a year, and we get a
shaded balcony in the summer heat. {:-)
To verify my calculations when the sun was directly overhead, I set up a plumb bob, so that the shadow from the suspension point would coincide with the shadow from the bob. I hope this shot illustrates that. There was a slight breeze at the time which perturbed things a bit.
