Madagascar Denuded (20101224)

These are shots to show the massive environmental destruction in Madagascar. All of these areas were formerly fully forested. Over 90% of the country has been stripped bare, a crying shame! The trees were mostly destroyed for slash and burn agriculture, i.e. to feed cattle, and to make charcoal to cook the cattle. I don't know what the future holds, as the remaining trees will become increasingly valuable firewood. {:-( The human population has trebled in the last forty years, so unrestrained growth and destruction will reach its limits.

In these satellite shots, here, and here, you can see where parks have preserved the forests from the savagery outside.
