Madagascar Tour 2010 Day 4 (20101223)

After getting up late and taking a leisurely breakfast in Ambilobe, we headed off to Ankarana National Park, but we were lost for awhile before we found the actual entrance, which we had passed by.

This park was very dry, and pretty hot, as the midday sun was strong, and there were many open areas. The park is noted for its tsingy, which are vast karst formations formed millions of years ago when the carbon dioxide concentration was much greater in the atmosphere, which led to accelerated limestone erosion. The volcanic landscape is also on the edge of the environmental warming battle, as it has dried out and deforested a lot in recent times, and has lost species depending on a more humid ecosystem.

Later, we headed off to Diego Suarez, which was a real pleasant surprise, as it is easily the nicest and most prosperous city in Madagascar. We also stayed in the nicest hotel in the country, the Grand, which was definitely a step up from a few other places. {:-)
