These fish were jumping around on the rock and breathing air. They occupied the same tide zone as the crabs, and they were avoiding going into the water.

After asking around, they were locally called "jumping fish" in French, and they are actually called Mudskippers, which are amphibious fish. It's amazing that biology classes do not feature these unusual fish.

I shot this with my 200 mm lens and a 2X Extender on a 25 mm Extension tube.
